Original illustrated front wrapper bound in three-quarter leather over black cloth. Decorative endpapers. Front and rear boards detached but present, lacking spine and rear wrapper. Rolandsknappen is a legendary tale by German writer & professor, Johann Karl August Musaeus. The author's works contained a unique satirical substance, therefore lacking the usual simplicity of typical folklore. Musaeus is best known for his collection of German fairy tales "Volksmärchen der Deutschen," which was published in 1782-86. This work delightfully illustrated with full-page and in-text b/w reproductions of drawings by Heinrich Lefler and Josef Urban. Decorative initials. Text in German. Staining and age wear to covers, with boards detached. Chipping along edges of front wrapper. Front free endpaper and blank page detached, tearing and chipping to edges of those leaves. Small library stamp on title-page and first page. Text and illustrated pages printed on thick high-quality paper, blank leaves is thinner paper with brittle edges. Binding in poor, interior bound leaves in very good condition. fair. Item #30934
