This splendid edition of "The Song of Songs" can be interpreted as a parable of the relationship of God and Israel, or for Christians, Christ and the Church or Christ and the human soul, as husband and wife. This work is magnificently illustrated with 12 culs-de-lampe and 25 etchings from designs by French Orientalist painter Alexandre Bida, who was known for drawing many of the Holy Bible scenes and the accuracy by which he accomplished his work. Each plate is protected with a tissue-guard. One of 250 copies, of which this is No. 197. Binding rebacked, but retaining the original spine laid in. Corners rubbed.
