London: R. Walker, 1745. First edition. Hardcover. Folio. 1160pp. Brown leather covered boards with title-label and raised bands. Frontispiece portrait of John Marchant. Red and black title page with the coat of arms of the British crown. Illustrated headpiece and tailpieces. Letter of privilege from King George II. English translation of the Old Testament and Apocrypha with scholarly commentary. Exquisite edition of the Old Testament, magnificently illustrated with numerous copper engravings depicting the most notable biblical events: The Creation, Expulsion from the Garden of Eden, Noah's Ark, Egyptian slavery, the Ten Plagues, the building of the Tabernacle, the fall of Jericho, the destruction of Sodom, the Binding of Isaac, Jephthah meeting his daughter, Samuel anointing David, David slaying Goliath, Job, and Judith slaying Holofernes. Maps of the Mediterranean Sea and the Land of Israel. This work stands out as an example of 18th century Christian apologetics, combining a scholarly knowledge of Jewish, Christian and classical sources. The stated purpose of this project was already to combat skeptics, what we think of today as the Enlightenment, who pointed to contradictions within the Bible to deny its divine authorship. Binding starting, but still intact. Book-plate and stamp from previous owner on front endpaper and title page. Frontispiece and title page chipped and stained. Small circular tear in the center of the frontispiece. Interior pages stained, but still legible. Map of the Mediterranean is torn. Overall in good condition. f to g. Item #30733
