John Richard Hersey was an American novelist and journalist. During World War II he covered the fighting in both Europe (Sicily) and Asia (Battle of Guadalcanal and the dropping of the atomic bomb), writing articles for Time, Life, and The New Yorker. His writings during this time In addition to The Wall, Hersey's World War II experience also led him to write A Bell for Adano about a small turn in Italy liberated by American forces.
