Dr. Kaufmann Kohler was a late 19th to early 20th German-American Jewish scholar. As a youth he studied with such Orthodox figures as R. Simon Bamberger, Dr. Marcus Lehmann, R. Jacob Ettlinger and R. Samson Raphael Hirsch before studying under R. Abraham Geiger. He came to the United States in 1869 where he assumed an active leadership in the Reform movement. Succeeded R. Dr. Isaac M. Wise as President of Hebrew Union College in 1903.
