Parisiis (Paris): Typographia Regia (Imprimerie Royale), 1697. First edition. Hardcover. Elephant folio. [18], CII, 1050 double columns (525pp). Original full calf with gold-tooling and lettering on spine. All edges red. Marbled endpapers. Engraved vignette on title page. Decorative headpiece and initials. Louis Thomassin, the famed French theologian and Oratorian, was one of the most learned men of the 17th century. This posthumous work was published by P. Bordes, who wrote a life of Thomassin at the beginning of the "Glossarium". When the book was published in Paris in 1697, it was considered as perhaps the most learned of all the books written to prove Hebrew the original tongue and source of all others. This Universal Hebrew Glossary was intended to demonstrate that "the divinity, antiquity, and perpetuity of the Hebrew tongue, with its letters, accents, and other characters, are established forever and beyond all cavil, by proofs drawn from all peoples, kindred, and nations under the sun." This thousand-columned elephant folio was issued from the French royal press, and is one of the most imposing monuments of human piety and folly; taking rank with the great treatises of Fromundus against Galileo, of Quaresmius on Lot's Wife, and of Gladstone on Genesis and Geology. Age wear on binding with heavy rubbing and abrasion on covers. 1/3 of spine missing. Joints split but boards holing firmly. Free front endpaper and endpaper at rear missing. Worming slightly affecting text throughout first pages. Moderate and sporadic worming along paper margin throughout. Half-title page heavily wormed and chipped along edges. Light damp-staining throughout. Fore-edge partly chewed along the first 150 pages, not affecting text. Binding in overall poor, interior in fair to good-. fair. Item #29210
