Theater [24 volumes bound in 12, complete]

Wien: Ignaz Klang, 1843. Erste vollständige Ausgabe (First complete edition). Mit Biographie, Portrait und Facsimile des Verfassers. Hardcover. 16mo. Original blind-stamped green cloth with letters and numbers in gold on spine. Frontispiece engraving of Iffland (protected by tissue-guard) in Vol. I. Scarce 1843 set of the complete works of August Wilhelm Iffland (1759-1814). Iffland was a German actor and dramatic author & critic. After running away at the age of eighteen he was fortunate enough to receive instruction from Hans Ekhof and in 1782 he was celebrated for his portrayal of Franz Moor in Schiller's world premiere of "Die Räuber." Fourteen years later he became director of the national theater of Prussian and in 1811 was appointed general director of all plays performed before royalty. The form of play in which he was most at home, both as actor and playwright, was the domestic drama, the sentimental play of everyday life. As a writer, Iffland never had the talents of a Goethe or Schiller but his works display a thorough mastery of the technical necessities of the stage. His best characters are simple and natural and fond of domestic life. Iffland's best-known plays are Dienstpflicht, Die Hagstozlen, Die Jäger, Die Mündel, and Die Advokaten. As an actor, he was conspicuous for his skillful portrayal of comedy. His gentlemen, polished men of the world, were models of perfection, and showed none of the traces of elaborate study which were present in his interpretations of tragedy. He particularly excelled in presenting the types of middle-class life that appear in his own comedies. Text in German, gothic script. Very minor age wear on bindings. Sporadic foxing to some leaves. Bookplate of Walter Reisch on inside of front board. Walter Reisch (1903-1983) was an Austrian-born film director and screenwriter. After fleeing from the Nazi's, Reisch emigrated to the United States where he collaborated with Billy Wilder, Charles Brackett, Richard Breen, and others. Reisch won an Oscar for 1953's screenplay of Titanic. Exceptional copies in overall very good condition. Scarce as a complete set. vg. Item #28289
