Jaroslav Jezek (1906 - 1942) was a Czech composer, conductor, pianist, as well as an author of classical, jazz, and film music. Initially his work consisted of chamber, piano and concertant compositions influenced by masters like Stravinsky, Arnold Schönberg, and the Parisian Les Six. Later he found and developed his own, specific modern expression. Jezek composed songs and dances for the plays and films of Jiri Voskovec & Jan Werich and for revue plays of the Prague Free Theatre. He also conducted orchestras featuring his original jazz compositions and arrangements. Jiri Voskovec (1905 - 1981) was a Czech-American actor, director, playwright, dramatist, and poet. Throughout most of his career he was associated with Jan Werich (1905 - 1980). In 1925, together with Werich, he founded the Osvobozené divadlo (Liberated Theater) which ultimately changed into a center for Czech clownery, a reaction to contemporary political and societal problems. The collaboration between Jezek, Voskovec and Jarich lasted for more than ten years. Their artistic partnership was a platform for their numerous lively left-wing political satires. Their performances were strictly anti-fascist, which led to the closure of the liberated Theater after the Nazi occupation in 1938. That same year the three were forced into exile in the United States. Leaf slightly creased on middle-fold, small part of edge creased with tiny closed tear, otherwise in near fine condition.
