Midrash Haggadol: Leviticus. Being a Compilation of Halakic and Haggadic Passages to the Pentateuch Taken From Ancient and Mediaeval Rabbinic Sources

New York: The Jewish Theological Seminary, 1932. First edition. Hardcover. Quarto. V, [1], 702pp. Original green cloth with gold lettering on spine. Title pages in Hebrew and English. Foreword in English. The importance of the Midrash ha-Gadol to the Pentateuch has been recognized since its discovery by Dr. Solomon Schechter. Although the date of the compilation of the Midrash is comparatively late, sometime during the 14th century, this Midrash is one of the most important sources of the tannaitic Midrashim, as well as of later Midrashim and other rabbinic works. The Midrash ha-Gadol contains numerous passages of lost Midrashim, and many variations of extant passages in rabbinic literature; also, many of its quotations have been regarded as unique, unparalled either in content or in diction, anywhere in talmudic-midrashic literature. Some age-wear on binding with staining on spine and back cover. Text in Hebrew. Binding in overall good-, interior in very good condition. g. Item #27986
