Significant work, tracing the historical development of clothing and costumes, including tattooing and other body ornaments. The author, Hilaire Hiler (1898-1966) was a man of many artistic talents. He was a painter, jazz musician, costume and set designer, muralist, psychologist, teacher and author. His interest in costume was especially strong, leading to the publication of this work. Profusely illustrated with reproductions of photographs in b/w and sepia tone, as well as some colored & b/w drawings. Minor creasing to edges of wraps, small closed tear along head and tail of spine. Staining and minor age wear on dust wrapper, three-inch closed tear along head of spine on dw.
