Deckled fore- and bottom page edges. Eben Norton Horsford (1818-1893) was an American scientist who is known for his interest in Viking settlements in America, and the monuments he built to Leif Erikson. He was determined to prove that North America had been discovered not by a Mediterranean Catholic, but by an Aryan. He wrote many books, articles and pamphlets about the Viking's visits to Massachusetts. After his death, his daughter Cornelia took up the cause. "My father, Eben Norton Horsford, in the last paragraph of "The Landfall of Leif Erickson," stated that his next paper would trace the connection between the Northmen and the name of the Western Continent. At one time I expected to carry out his intention; but I have since decided that it would be best to publish the following paper first, and with it a short account of the investigations I myself have made this spring, as the latter may serve to connect the two papers by showing the probable movements of the Northmen in this country from the time Leif Erikson discovered Vineland to the arrival of the Europeans at the end of the fifteenth century" (Cornelia Horsford). Illustrated with two screen-prints in heliogravure on tissue, two plans and some drawings. One plan in fold-out. Minor rubbing to head and tail of spine and corners. Slight scuffing and staining on boards. Heavy chipping and tearing on dust wrapper, sections of dust wrapper missing. Foxing, slight chipping and few closed tears on edges of some leaves.
