The Tristan Romance in the Meisterlieder of Hans Sachs [INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR TO WOLF LESLAU]

Berkeley: University of California Press, 1963. Softcover. Large octavo. v,223-277pp. Original printed wraps. Inscribed by Sobel to Wolf Leslau and his wife on title-page: "For Professor and Mrs. Leslau Cordially, Eli Sobel." Volume 40, No. 2, pp. 223-278 of "University of California Publications in Modern Philology. "The Tristan Legend and its relations to the literature of Arthurian romance are monumental in volume and significance and truly international in scope. This study does not attempt more than a barely peripheral involvement with the history, literary problems, and technicalities of the medieval songs and tales that have so long occupied so many scholars. Its purposes are, first, to present the poetic production of Hans Sachs, the sixteenth-century German poet, playwright, and Meistersinger, which treats, within the accepted forms and rules of Meistergesang, those portions of the romance of Tristan and Isolde that inspired him; and, second, to show the relationships of his Meisterlieder to his source as well as to his seven-act tragedy which was the first German drama devoted to the Tristan romance." Sunning to wraps, otherwise in near fine condition. From the last library of Professor Leslau. vg. Item #27269
