Frankfurt am Main: Franz Benjamin Auffarth, 1859. First edition. Hardcover. Large octavo. VIII, 832pp. Original paper covered boards with title-label laid on spine. In 1859, Rabbi Leopold Stein launched a Jewish weekly magazine which goals were to teach informally and to entertain. Like Christian family periodicals, it tried to address the entire family, scrupulously avoided controversial issues, and reached out to the common folk, who were little interested in theological debates or details of the emancipation process. The paper published accessible poems (mainly by Minna Cohen), short essays, and simple narrative fiction geared at fortifying the readers' attachment to Judaism and their sense of solidarity with other Jews, while it avoided any semblance of a "preacher's tone". Stein called his weekly newspaper Freitagabend because that word was redolent with cherished memories of the family gathered around the table for the friday evening Sabbath meal. Some age wear on binding with rubbing along joints and edges. Corners rubbed. Offsetting on endpapers. Minor damp staining on upper margin of first pages. Very minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Text in German, gothic script. Binding in overall fair to good-, interior in good+ to very good condition. g. Item #26535
