Original spine with black number- and maroon title-label with gold lettering on spine. Important 18th century expansion of William Cullen's lectures on the Materia Medica which was original published (without his permission) in 1771. Materia Medica was a famous commentary by 1st century Greek physician Pedanius Dioscorides. The work covered about 500 plants along with a number of therapeutically useful animal and mineral products. It is a precursor to all modern pharmacopoeias, and is considered one of the most influential herbal books in history. William Cullen (1710-1790) was a highly respected Scottish physician and chemist who gave extramural lectures on physiology, botany, chemistry and materia medica. Rippling to leaves, sporadic foxing. Signature of previous owner and handwritten date on free front endpaper, closed tears and chipping to edges of that leaf. Last page crudely repaired with clear tape.
