Illustrated with 12 full-page b/w reproductions of drawings by French engraver, illustrator and sculptor, Paul Gustave Doré (1832-1883). The Wandering Jew is a figure from medieval Christian folklore whose legend began to spread in Europe in the 13th century. The original legend concerns a Jew who taunted Jesus on his way to the Crucifixion and then was cursed to walk the earth until the Second Coming. Age wear, scuffing and staining on binding. Joint on front board near head of spine bumped. Hinges starting. Tail of spine chipped. Foxing on title-page and blank leaf preceding title. Binding in fair, interior in overall very good condition. Late 19th century edition with twelve of the most striking of Doré's imaginative works. g. Item #26055
