NP: Self published, ca. 1943. Limited edition (not numbered). Hardcover. 4to. Unpaginated ([6],22pp. Brown cloth with silver Iron Cross stamped on front cover. Illustrated front and rear endpapers. Inscription on free front endpaper: "Unserer lieben Paula, die uns in den Stunden tiefsten Leides so treu beigestanden, zum Andenken an unseren unvergesslichen Herbert. Marthe und Oskar Haempel. (Place unreadable), 1943." The inscription is from Herbert's parents to his widow (?), Paula. Self published by the family in remembrance of their son, German Wehrmacht officer Herbert Haempel, who fell on the Eastern Front on August 9th, 1941. Tipped-in frontispiece of a b/w reproduction of a photograph showing Herbert in uniform. Additional two tipped-in photographic reproductions, one of Herbert and his brother Günther, the other of Herbert's grave site. Includes printed, tipped-in letter by Günther to Marthe & Oskar informing them on the death of their son, a short biography, war diary, as well as some poems written in honor of Herbert. Decorative initials in maroon throughout. Slight rubbing on head and tail of spine and corners. Finger smudges on free front endpaper. Bottom part of pages slightly creased. Tight copy in overall very good condition. No information or listings found anywhere online. Scarce publication by the Haempel family, expressing pride in their son for serving and dying for the Führer and the Fatherland. vg. Item #25233
