Shocking pictorial account showing the ruins of postwar Cologne. During W.W.II, the city was bombed in 262 separate air raids. The most devastating attack by 1,000 Allied bombers took place on the 30th & 31st of May 1942. Eight years earlier L. Schwann published a book under the title "Köln, Antlitz einer alten deutschen Stadt." It showed the city in its architectural beauty. By 1945, the center of Cologne was almost entirely destroyed as shown in this work. Foreword by Franz A. Hoyer. Profusely illustrated with b/w reproductions of photographs of the Hohenzollern Bridge, the cathedral, old market, Wallraf Square, bank of the river Rhine, St. Martin's, St. Mary's, St. John's, other churches, as well as street and city scenery. Sunning, scuffing and minor age wear on binding. Top right corner of front board bumped. Slight abrasions on cloth on head and tail of spine. Heavy chipping, tearing and discoloration on dj. Slight age toning to outer edges of interior pages. Text in German. Dj in poor, binding in fair, interior in very good condition.
