Rare publication looking at Canadian stage and film actress Julia Arthur (1869-1950). At the tender age of 12 she became a leading actress, playing challenging roles like Ophelia, Juliet, Lady Macbeth, and Lady Anne in Richard III. With her growing success over the years on stage all over the world, she was offered a chance to perform in the fledgling motion picture industry. She appeared in a total of 10 films. This work (published before films were made) is illustrated with b/w reproductions of many of Arthur's characters she played in the theater. Last page entitled "Julia Arthur and her authors" with b/w photographic reproductions of drawings showing Shakespeare and Alfred Tennyson, as well as reproductions of photographs of T. B. Aldrich, Emile Bergerat, Francis Hodgson Burnett, and W. S. Gilbert. Each plate with printed decorative floral ornaments in b/w. Creasing, sunning and minor staining on wraps. Small closed tear on bottom edge of front wrapper. Foxing on top edge of title-page. Wraps in fair, interior in overall very good condition. Scarce. g. Item #24008
