Gold-embossed floral decorations and gold lettering on spine. Binding designed and bound by Sancorski & Sutcliffe, London. Top edge gilt. Deckled fore- and bottom page edges. Decorative endpapers with colorful floral designs. Signed by Rackham on limitation page. Ex-libris of Lucy [Doheny] Smith Battson on free front endpaper. Inscribed to her by Countess Estelle Doheny, "Valentines Greetings to Lucy from Ma D., February 14th. 1927." L. D. Smith Battson was the daughter-in-law of Estelle Doheny (1875-1958), who was a Los Angeles socialite and the second wife of oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny. Tipped-in color frontispiece. Decorative drawings in green on title-page. Two page letter, handwritten and signed by Swinburne from the Pines, Putney Hill, dated June 4 - 1905 & original envelope with canceled stamp, addressed to Miss Anthony, tipped-in at front of book. Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909) was an English poet and novelist. He invented the roundel form and contributed to the famous Eleventh Edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica. Scarce de luxe edition illustrated with 9 (incl. frontispiece) color reproductions of drawings by Arthur Rackham tipped-in on gray art paper, as well as b/w reproductions of 58 line drawings. The frontispiece in this edition was not present in the trade edition. Color plates protected by captioned tissue guards. Preface by Edmund Gosse. Front cover detached but present, protected by mylar. Minor rubbing on corners and along joints on front and back cover. Head of spine slightly chipped. Middle raised band missing, otherwise tight book in very good to near fine condition. Scarce. Unique copy in a stunning binding. vg. Item #23996
