NP: NP, n/d. Hardcover. Elephant Folio. 170 leaves. Maroon half-leather over decorative paper-covered board with paper labels glued to cover and spine. A unique collection of more than 1,000 different textile samples, roughly 2 1/4 x 5 3/4" in size, with an abundance of vibrant Art Deco designs. They are organized in five series without any descriptive text but contain stamped series numbers in Roman numerals on each page and handwritten Arabic numbers next to each of the textile samples. This extraordinary collection covers a wide range of colors and designs ranging from subtle, at times sparse application of lines to dense abstract, yet floral like and ornamental designs. In absence of any descriptive text I can't help but think of them at times as precursors to the delicate designs of Issey Miyake or the more forceful designs of Jhane Barnes.
The samples are mounted to the gray, heavy paper stock pages, at times front and back of leaves, with paper remnants of paper label on spine. The inside cover contains sticker reading Geschäftsbücherfabrik (Business Record Books Manufacturer) C.A. Kaap, Ebnat-Kappel, and a large white sheet pasted to the inside cover containing design numbers and corresponding page in handwriting. A number of post-it stickers, in yellow and rose color, with handwritten numbers throughout the catalog suggests that the book was in use, according to the official post-it history, sometime after 1980.
Age wear and staining on binding. Wear along edges of first leave with tears and chips at lower right corner and a few of the cloth samples torn or missing. Second leave with moderate chips in same place as first leave, here not affecting samples. Leaves reinforced with tape at foredge throughout. Creasing to pages throughout. Binding in overall good, samples in very good condition. g. Item #23987
