Russian grammar and syntax textbook, exhaustively detailing orthography, sentence structure and grammar rules, with ample examples. Designed for use in "the third grade of intermediate educational institutions" (secondary school). Created by Aleksandr Ivanovich Kirpichnikov, a famous literary historian teaching literature in the universities of Kharkov and Odessa, as well as several gymnasiums around Moscow. This is the seventh "complete and revised edition, in accordance with the new educational plan," approved by "the Learned Committee of the Ministry of Public Enlightenment, and the Holy Synod, for use in Divine and Military educational institutions." with Kirpichnikov's original preface, as well as his statement on the revisions. An important public intellectual and the progenitor of the "comparative historical literature method," Kirpichnikov was particularly interested in medieval literature, and the end of the textbook includes a number of literary examples of syntax, such as an 11th century historical account on "the Death of St. Boris," as well as Vassilii Zhukovsky's poem "Roland the Armsbearer." Because of his literary background, Kirpichnikov's textbook does not address "the syntax of folk and conversational language, because it differs from literary syntax, and we believe that it is imperative for the student first to learn the essential rules of literary language, prior to considering the conversational exceptions to these rules.... We have also omitted the logical side of syntax, because grammar logic, as a self-contained whole, is useless and difficult in relation to the educational curriculum of students in the third grade..."
