Splendidly illustrated throughout with 65 in-text woodcuts, this work is an exegetical rendering in Yiddish of the Torah, the Haftorah and Megilot. Originally composed in the 16 century with the intention to enable both men and women to understand the Torah in simple language, it was used primarily by women as reading matter on the Sabbath. The work consists of discourses on selected topics from the weekly Torah portion. This copy was owned by Rabbi Stephen S. Wise (1874-1949), an American rabbi who was a Zionist leader, who sounded the first warnings of the dangers of Nazism to the Jewish and non-Jewish world. he was co-founder of the NAACP and ACLU. Previous owner's contemporary inscription in Hebrew on verso of front free endpaper. First four pages repaired, affecting text near edges.
