Julius II was nicknamed il Papa Terribile (The terrible Pope), because of his aggressive foreign policy, ambitious building projects, and patronage for the arts. Leo X was elected after Julius II's death. He is known primarily for the sale of indulgences to reconstruct St. Peter's Basilica and his challenging Martin Luther's 95 theses. Illustrated with 72 full-page b/w photographic reproductions of art work of the time, coins, woodcuts, architecture, ornaments, weapons, etc. Frontispiece of Pope Julius II., protected by captioned tissue guard.
