Julius II was nicknamed il Papa Terribile (The terrible Pope), because of his aggressive foreign policy, ambitious building projects, and patronage for the arts. Leo X was elected after Julius II's death. He is known primarily for the sale of indulgences to reconstruct St. Peter's Basilica and his challenging Martin Luther's 95 theses.
