Library number in white near tail of spine, library plates and stamp on free front endpaper, one small stamp on title-page. Minor age toning to outer edges of interior pages. John Wesley Powell (1834-1902) was a American geologist and ethnologist. His efforts towards the reorganization of rival surveys in the West were a factor in bringing about the establishment of the U.S. Geological Survey (1879), of which he served as a director from 1881 to 1894. In 1879, Powell founded and became the first director of the Bureau of American Ethnology.
