London: Printed for Will. and John Innys, 1724. First edition. Hardcover. 8vo. [2],106pp. Modern paper-covered boards with black lettering on spine. Modern endpapers. Rare first edition of Law's critique on Mandeville's Fable of the Bees in which Law defends morality versus Mandeville's view that man is motivated only by self-interest. "Law vindicates morality on the highest grounds; for pure style, caustic wit, and lucid argument this work is remarkable." (Kress 3557; Rothschild 1315). William Law (1686-1761) was an English cleric and theological writer. Bernard Mandeville (ca. 1670-1733) was a Dutch physician who went to England in the 1690's where he became well known as a satirist and moral philosopher. Woodcut headpiece on page 1, decorative initial on same page. Ornamental printers device on last page. Some staining on binding. Front board bowed. Sporadic foxing throughout, contents toned.
