Handwriting in black ink by previous owner on verso of free front endpaper and on margin of last page. Illustrated with 14 (Stations of the Cross - * see below) engravings of Jesus' suffering on the way to crucifixion. The author Leonardo da Porto Maurizio (1676-1751) was an Italian priest who was proclaimed a saint by Pope Pius IX in 1867. He created and promoted "The way (stations) of the cross." Eventually the 14 Stations of the Cross became an important catechetical tool, and the popularity of this devotion inspired some of the greatest examples of medieval Christian art. Age wear and abrasions on binding. Spine with tear, cracks and chips. String binding not tight. 1 plate loose. Text in Italian with 2 pages in Latin.
