Limited German edition of Hoffmann's 3 act opera Die Maske (The Mask) which he wrote in 1799. "Aufgefunden und zum ersten Male veröffentlicht von Friedrich Schnapp." Illustrated with 2 full-page reproductions of drawings in sepia tone, 1 facsimile letter, as well as a fold-out page listing the cast. 32 pages in rear with musical scores from the opera. E.T.A. Hoffmann (1776-1822) was a composer and novelist. He was a notorious philanderer and impecunious alcoholic who possibly was the darkest of the German Romantics. Out of his reverence for Mozart, he replaced his Christian name Wilhelm with Mozart's middle name to call himself Ernst Theodor Amadeus (E.T.A.) Hoffmann.
