Those Holy Fields. Palestine, Illustrated by Pen and Pencil

London: The Religious Tract Society, ca 1875. First edition. Hardcover. Quarto. 223, [1]pp. Full crushed morocco with gilt lettering on spine and elaborate Victorian gold-tooling on covers, edges and spine. Blind triple-rule frame and border on boards. All edges gilt. Dentelles. Engraved frontispiece. Decorative title-page. Illustrated headpieces. Decorative initials. Fascinating work being an account of a journey through Southern Palestine or Judea in 1873, designed to illustrate the histories of the Scriptures. It is profusely illustrated with numerous b/w full-page maps and pen & pencil illustrations depicting views of the Holy Land. Rev. Samuel Manning was a clergyman who, like many of his contemporaries, acquired his great knowledge of the Holy Land entirely from a study of the Bible. In 1873, however, he travelled to the Holy Land to "compare the Land and the Book". This work is the result of his researches. Some age-wear on binding with rubbing along edges, joints, head and tail of spine and raised bands, with abrasion on morocco. Previous owner's inscription on fly leaf and dated July 1885. Minor and sporadic foxing on very first and very last pages. Binding in overall good to good+, interior in very good condition. g to vg. Item #21154
