A remarkable account of a journey through the Holy Land in 1873, designed to illustrate the histories of the Scriptures. Samuel Manning was a clergyman who, like many of his contemporaries, acquired his great knowledge of the Holy Land entirely from a study of the Bible. In 1873, however, he travelled to the Holy Land to "compare the Land and the Book". This work is the result of his researches. Moderate and sporadic rubbing along edges of binding. Previous owner's inscription on fly leaf, and at upper margin of title page (not affecting lettering). Front hinge starting. Heavy foxing to frontispiece, tissue-guard, and title page.
