It is the only comedy he wrote. As well, this is the only Wagner- opera that has does not revolve around a myth or legend. Instead, it is set in a clear historic time and place. Furthermore, this is the only opera which story was written by Wagner himself. Richard Wagner (1813-1883). Renowned German composer, music theorist and essayist. Wagner regarded himself as "the most German of men". He has been classified as an anarchist and a socialist and, simultaneously, as a proto-fascist and nationalist, as a vegetarian and an anti-Semite. In fact, his name appeared in connection to almost all major trends in German history of the 19th and 20th centuries. (Hannu Salmi).
