It is the only comedy he wrote. As well, this is the only Wagner- opera that has does not revolve around a myth or legend. Instead, it is set in a clear historic time and place. Furthermore, this is the only opera which story was written by Wagner himself. Richard Wagner (1813-1883). Renowned German composer, music theorist and essayist. Wagner regarded himself as "the most German of men". He has been classified as an anarchist and a socialist and, simultaneously, as a proto-fascist and nationalist, as a vegetarian and an anti-Semite. In fact, his name appeared in connection to almost all major trends in German history of the 19th and 20th centuries. (Hannu Salmi). He was Hitler's favorite composer and the Nazi's used him as an example of "pure German art."
