Neuzeitbau 33. Neuzeitbau-Tapeten [Pre-WWII German wallpaper samples]

Stuttgart: Tapeten- und Linoleumhaus Paul Schmitz, 1933. First edition. Hardcover. Oblong octavo. Unpaginated. [2]pp (Title), [85] leaves (Wallpaper samples). Original bolted linen covered boards with red lettering on front cover and spine. Scarce catalogue containing 85 delightful color wallpaper samples from the 1933 collection of the German wallpaper manufacturer "Tapeten- und Linoleumhaus Paul Schmitz." The samples are composed of a variety of abstract and geometric designs, some heavily textured on various types of paper stock. Many are clearly Bauhaus inspired as they feature bright, friendly shades with detailed line and dot patterns, corresponding to the clear, plain aesthetics at the Bauhaus. Bauhaus wallpapers were not “patterned” in the traditional sense but had mottled, flecked, and combed markings and textured effects. The textile designers working for Schmitz in 1933 were known architects and artists affiliated with the Bauhaus circle.

The company prides itself for its exclusivity, its timely, functional, and unobtrusive designs which are, at the same time, extremely durable and inexpensive. Model and style number printed at verso of each sample. Laid in an original order-postcard self-addressed to 'Tapeten- und Linoleumhaus Paul Schmitz'. Sale terms and conditions, and advertising text, on inside front cover and title page. Text in German. Minor and sporadic sunning and foxing along edges of binding. Free front endpaper and title slightly foxed. Text in German. Binding and interior in overall good+ to very good, samples in very good condition. g+ to vg. Item #20057
