On the author (Source: Public Domain)
Rudolf Borchardt (1877 - 1945) was a Jewish-German writer and translator. Borchardt's language skills as well as his personal life choice isolated him as a poet of the 20th century, he became a „poeta doctus“. The son of an East Prussian merchant of Jewish heritage was shaped by the study of archeology in Bonn and Göttingen as well as by the poetry of George and Hofmannsthal. After settling in Toscany in 1903, Borchart developed a vision of ancient-European heritage, with a focus on the Ancient period as well as Dante (Medieval period). He was a lifetime friend of Hugo von Hoffmansthal.
