The Fool of the Nineteenth Century; and other Tales.

New York: D. Appelton & Co., 1845. Hardcover. 8vo. vii, 373 pp. Green embossed cloth with gold lettering on spine. This work is a compilation of the works of Johann Heinrich Daniel Zschokke (1771 - 1848) who was a German author and reformer. He spent some time as playwright with a company of strolling actors, but afterwards studied philosophy, theology and history at the University of Frankfurt (Oder), where in 1792 he established himself as a Privatdozent. His literary career mainly rests upon his enthusiasm for modern ideas in politics and religion, by the sound, practical judgment displayed in his works, and by the energy and lucidity of his style. Translated into English from the German. Fraying to head and tail of spine. Scuffing to boards. Foxing to front and rear endpapers. Brown stain on p. 2 along spine. Very minor browning to outer edges of pages due to age, otherwise book is in good condition. g. Item #19498
