The Testaments of the XII Patriarchs: An Attempt to estimate their Historic and Dogmatic Worth (Testamenta XII Patriarchum; Ad Fidem Codicis Cantabrigiensis Edita: Accedunt Lectiones Cdod Oxoniensis.)

Cambridge: Deighton, Bell, and Co., 1869. Hardcover. 8vo. xx, 125 pp. of English + 208 pp. of Greek text. Marble covered boards with red cloth spine. The “Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs”, is an important apocryphal text, comprising the dying commands of the twelve sons of Jacob. It is part of the Oskan Armenian Orthodox Bible of 1666. Originally written in Greek, fragments of similar writings were found at Qumran in Hebrew, but opinions are divided if these are the same texts as well as whether the books are Christian rewritings of earlier Jewish writings, or Jewish writings with Christian interpolations. This book contains the author's research and investigation into the origin, history and theology of the text, an English translation, (which is annotated with critical notes based on academic scholarship, Semitic and Indo-European Linguistics,) as well as a critical edition of the Greek text itself based upon a number of manuscripts. Ex library copy. The Greek text has marginal pencil and ink markings as well as notes and underlining throughout. Some staining to front endpapers due to age, otherwise book is in overall good condition. g. Item #19487
