Puplished on the 250th anniversarey of the first arrival of Jewish people in America. David Philipson, (1862 - 1949) was a Reform rabbi and author. In 1883 he was one of the first four to graduate from the Hebrew Union College. In 1885 He participated in the Pittsburgh conference which formulated the principles of Reform Judaism, the so-called” Pittsburgh Platform.” He was a founding member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and served as its president from 1907 to 1909. He wrote a number of works including, “The Reform Movement in Judaism,” “The Jew in English Fiction,” and edited “The Letters of Rebecca Gratz.” In 1942 he wrote an autobiography, My Life as an American Jew. Through his writings and speeches, Philipson came to be regarded as a regarded as a represented spokesman of "classical" Reform Judaism. Philipson was a staunch advocate of Americanism and remained throughout his life an opponent of Jewish nationalism of any sort, particularly Zionism. This particular work historically traces the Jewish community in the new world from the time of Columbus up until the present when it was written.
