Heavy chipping to spine, most of backstrip missing. Hinges starting. Page edges uncut, as issued. Minor age toning to outer edges of interior pages, staining to margins of few pages. The author, Sir John Bowring (1792 - 1872) was an English political economist, traveler & polyglot who spoke French, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Danish, Serbian, Polish, Arabic, Magyar, Chinese, Bohemian, Swedish as well as other languages. He was also the fourth Governor of Hong Kong. This Russian anthology was the first in a series of ambitious undertakings by the author where he had originally planned to cover all of European poetry. Though he never completed the entire task, this volume was one of the more famous and endearing of his works, for which Czar Alexander actually gave him a special diamond ring in reward.
