Original blue cloth clamshell box, with blind-stamped borders and decoration, and gilt lettering on front board and spine. Beveled edges. This portfolio-clamshell box contains the text volume and the color plates. Text volume has its original glassine over paper covered boards. Illustrated endpapers being a map of Assyria, Armenia and Syria. Decorative initials. Color frontispiece with captioned tissue-guard. Fascinating work profusely illustrated with 75 full-page colored plates on stiff quality art board, each one protected with a printed tissue-guard. Plates are loose (as issued). Edition de Luxe of 500 copies, this being No.245 signed by the artist. William Hole was an English artist, illustrator, etcher, engraver and a member of the Royal Scottish Academy. He travelled to Palestine in 1900 in order to study the background for biblical painting and there began working on the 80 watercolors that would eventually appear as illustrations in his book The Life of Jesus of Nazareth. Edge wear on clamshell box with joints cracked and edges frayed. Closed tears with parts of paper missing at bottom of text volume's spine. Original glassine chipped at tail of spine.
