Breslau: Schlesische Verlagsanstalt v. S.Schottlaender, 1902. Softcover. 8vo. 344pp. Illustrated wrappers. Work on the Talmud and Rabbinic opposition to it, especially Leon de Modena ["Kol Sakal"]. Here, Stein refutes Reggio's view that most of the Talmudic ordinances were not intended for perpetual observance; and were practised only by the rigorous Pharisees. According to Reggio, it was not until much later, that the casuists ("posekim") established such ordinances as a part of the Law. Consequently, Modena was, in many cases wrong in attacking the Talmudists. Reggio's theory has been refuted by Simon Stern in the preface to his German translation of Modena's works published under the title "Der Kampf des Rabbiners Gegen den Talmud im XVII. Jahrhundert." Spine missing, with a part of it loose but present. Binding still firm. Age wear to wrappers. Owner's writings and stamps to inside of front wrappers and title page. Otherwise clean and tight. In German. Binding in fair, book in good condition. g. Item #18679
