On the author (Source: A lecture by Dr. Eckhard Michael, director of the "Museum für das Fürstentum Lüneburg", held in May 2001. Our translation):
"Wilhelm Friedrich Volger (1794 - 1879). Volger, who had a doctorate in Philosophie and worked as a teacher for 52 years, published a variety of school books and scientific works. (...) The 19th century was an Age of upheaval. The Industrial Revolution started its triumphal process, nation states were formed and established. The result were radical economic, political, social and cultural changes - and all of it happened during the life and work of Wilhelm Friedrich Volger in Lüneburg. In 1848 Volger began to be political active in a so-called 'citizen club', that enthusiastically accepted the ideas of the new Nationalism in the tradition of the “Paulskirche. In April 1850 he called to establish an association for the preservation of anbtiquities and works of art. The antiquity association was created and already counted 212 members in its first year. Volger, had idealistic and educational interests to preserve antiquities: His motives are connected to the awakening of a national consciousness." It is in the same context that he wrote his historic and geographic schoool books. [of which this is one of].
