Almost each page in this work has an evocative illustration of sculptures dating to antiquity and earlier, consisting of the complete collection of sculpture at the from the National Museum Antiquities at Saint-Germain-en-Laye, a Parisian suburb. Salomo Reinach, the author, was born at St Germain en Laye, where the collection portrayed was held. An important archaeologist, who made groundbreaking discoveries at Myrina, Cyme, Thasos, Imbros, Lesbos, Carthage and Odessa. He obtained an appointment at the National Museum of Antiquities at Saint-Germain-en-Laye and was joint editor of the Revue archeologique, to name just a few of his accomplishments.
