Paris: Au Bureau de l'Eclipse, n/d (ca. 1871). First edition. Hardcover. Oblong quarto. Unpaginated. (3) 83 of 93 plates. Red cloth string-tied portfolio, at top bottom and foredge, containing a collection of color drawings by Draner (Paul Renard). Printed at Coulboeuf, Paris.

The portfolio is a satirical rendering, printed in color lithography, of the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71 which led to the German unification under the leadership of Otto von Bismarck. This collection is divided into three parts, each with title page and 31 plates:

1. Les Soldats de la République. L'Armée Française en campagne (The soldiers of the Republic. The French Army at war). This part depicts soldiers from different army branches and ranks, e.g. marines, infantry, artillery, Turkish soldiers, drummer, riflemen, members of the infirmary, etc. Twenty-three plates present, missing plates 2, 7, 15, 17, 25, 26, 28, plate 22 present twice.

2. Souvenirs du Siège de Paris. Les Défenseurs de la Capitale. (Memories of the siege of Paris. The defenders of the Capital). The defense of Paris is illustrated with various scenes, e.g. a French soldier carrying vegetables in two German helmets, allied soldiers strolling through Paris, a messenger picking up orders at the Ministry of War, a battalion searching for enemies in the woods, a soldier at the front having breakfast, etc. Thirty plates present, missing plate 8

3. Paris Assiégé. Scènes de la vie Parisienne. (Paris under siege. Scenes of the Parisian life). Satirical renderings of Paris life relating to famine, a man in uniform chasing a cat chasing a mouse, a soldier offering food to a baroness, civilians taking cover while taking flak, caption "neither men nor women, all Siamese ambassadors," etc. Thirty plates, missing plates 22 and 27.

Laid in a one page comic page in color, twenty pictures, by Pellerin & Cie.: Imagerie D'Epinal No. 1234. Ex-libris of Robert Florey (famous French screenwriter, actor and film director) on inside front and back covers. Light staining and rubbing to boards and spine with one two by one inch cutout at tail. Incomplete. Missing plates as described above. Minor age-toning and slight creasing along pages. Tape-staining at foredge of each title-page (not affecting text or drawing). Captions in French. Portfolio in fair, plates in good condition. fair. Item #15655
