Commentatio critica de Ephraemo Syro s. s. interprete, qua simul versionis Syriacae, quam Peschito vocant, lectiones variae ex Ephraemi commentariis collectae exhibentur [The critical commentary of Ephrem the Syrian, interpreted and translated into Syriac, with the Peshitta*, various lectures and a collection of Ephrem's comments]

Halis Saxonum: In Libraria Gebaeeria, 1828. Softcover. 4to. 62(1)pp. Stiff blue cardboard wrappers. Work of critical Bible commentary. Written by Ephrem the Syrian, a deacon, prolific Syriac language hymn writer and theologian of the 4th century. He is venerated by Christians throughout the world and especially among Syriac Christians, as a saint. Ephrem wrote a wide variety of hymns, poems and homilies in verse, as well as prose biblical commentaries. These were works of practical theology for the edification of the church in troubled times. So popular were his works that for centuries after his death, Christian authors wrote hundreds of pseudepigraphous works in his name. Ephrem's works witness to an early vibrant expression of Christian faith, little touched by European modes of thought and more engaged with Eastern methods of discourse. Front wrapper and spine missing. Rear wrapper loose but present. Binding of text firm. 1/3 of front free endpaper cut off at foredge. Browning and foxing to pages, not affecting text. Handwritten bibliographical marks to front endpaper. In Latin, Syriac, Hebrew. Binding in poor, interior in good- condition. g. Item #15101

*The Peshitta version of the Old Testament. The word "Peshita" derives from Syriac for "simple", "common". An independent translation into Syriac, based largely on a Hebrew text similar to the Proto-Masoretic Text. It shows a number of linguistic and exegetical similarities to the Aramaic Targums but is now no longer thought to derive from them.
