Folkestone: J. English, n.d. [ca. mid 1890s]. First edition. Softcover. Oblong octavo. Unpaginated [37 pages]. Sunned olive green decorated and photo-illustrated wrappers, with black lettering on the covers. This scarce publication contains 53 views of Folkstone and Hythe district of Kent, England including the areas of Folkstone, Hythe, Saltwood and Sandgate, documented throughout in b/w photographic reproductions. Among the images shown are various landmarks, streets and buildings including The William Harvey statue, The Leas Promenade, Augusta Gardens, the Warren, the harbour, the beach, The Sandgate Hill Lift (opened in 1891), the pier, Victoria Hospital, Saltwood, Radnor Park and the Royal Pavilion Hotel (before the 1899 renovations). Pages arranged in 1, 2, and 4-image spreads. Rear endpaper with a handwritten inscription to a previous owner, dated 1935. Back cover, interior wrappers and the front endpaper all with period local advertisements. This is one of a number of related titles from publisher J. English, who was known for his many tourist guides to the sites and publications on history of the region, during the late 19th and early 20th century.

Wrappers with some sunning, smudges and light stains. Head and tail of spine rubbed, chipped and torn. Light rubbing creases and/or chipping to other corners. Back cover with a period postage stamp and a black stain in the bottom left corner. Edges of book block with light staining and/or foxing. Interior with occasion light smudges throughout, with images unaffected, still clean and bright. Wrappers in good-, interior in very good+ condition overall. Extremely scarce. g- to vg+. Item #45797
