Catalogus codicum Copticorum manuscriptorum qui in Museo Borgiano Velitris adservantur

Leipzig: J. C., 1903. New edition. Hardcover. Folio (13 1/4 x 10"). xii, 663, [1]pp (Text), 7 leaves (Plates), as issued. Original quarter vellum over printed paper covered boards, with red lettering to spine, and black lettering to front cover.

Facsimile of the original 1810 first edition of the catalogue of Coptic manuscripts in the collection of cardinal Stefano Borgia, housed in his Borgia Palace in Velletri.

Many of the Borgia Coptic fragments contain works of Shenoute from the White Monastery library. These were probably the first manuscripts from the White Monastery to reach the European collections.

These shed light not only on the role of the Sahidic dialect, until that time considered less important than the Bohairic one, in which most of the texts known and studied in that period were written, but also on the value of Shenoute as an author of the Coptic literature.

Binding age-toned and rubbed along edges. Spine partly taped, with minor chipping to head and tail. Ex-library copy with bookplate on inside of front cover, pocket on inside of back cover, and stamp at top and bottom edges. Previous owner's name dated 1910 at upper margin of front free endpaper. Text in Latin and Coptic. Binding in overall fair to good-, interior in very good condition. fair to g-. Item #45614
