London: Williams, Lea & Co., 1940-1955. First edition. Softcover. Octavos. Blue, brown and orange, printed paper wrappers. Some vols. with black lettering on front cover and spine, some with silver. Volume 5707 (1946-1947) signed and inscribed by the author/editor Rabbi "S. Levy" in black ink on the title page. This collection is a run of 12 volumes of the annual publication from 1940-1955 (5701-5716), missing four volumes from the years 1941-1944, but otherwise consecutive.
Volumes of the annual publication consist of three sections. The first is a Jewish calendar for the year, including dates and times for holidays, festivals and the weekly Sabbath. The second section is a directory, with names, addresses and telephone numbers of then contemporary Jewish institutions across the UK, including synagogues, cemeteries, Jewish businesses and other Jewish community organizations. The third section consists of essays on various Jewish topics by Levy, many of which were reprinted from other publications. Some volumes with printed card insert, "with author's compliments", laid in.
The volume 5701 (1940-1941) with missing wrappers, book block only. Volume 5710 (1949-1950), with wrappers detached but present. Volume 5706 (1945-1946) and 5708 (1947-1948) with book block starting. Wrappers with some sunning, bumping, rubbing, and light staining to covers and spines of some volumes. Interiors with occasional sporadic light water stains, and smudges, to some volumes. Age toning to some pages. Wrappers in fair to very good condition, interiors in overall good to very good+ condition. fair to vg+. Item #41098
