Fly leaf inscribed in Latin and signed by Karl Fischer, the official censor, revisor and translator of Hebrew books of the city of Prague. Official tipped in authorization (Ex officio No. 1075, dated February 22, 1815) facing title page and signed by Rabbi Flekeles. The fame of Rabbi Flekeles rests on his published sermons, responsa and other teachings, chief among them his volume of collected sermons, Olat Hodesh (1785-1800). As Rabbi of Prague he was directly involved in making decisions relating to the participation of Jews in civil or state forums such as the legal courts, answering questions such as upon which sacred text should Jews be sworn and to whom should their oath be made. “In connection with the question put by the censor Karl Fischer, ‘whether there is any distinction between an Israelite swearing to his fellow Israelite and swearing to a Gentile,’ Fleckeles replied, ‘that the force of an oath is great, and no distinction can be made between taking an oath to an Israelite and a non-Jew’ (Teshuvah me-Ahavah, pt. I, no. 26)” (Encyclopedia Judaica VI, 1340). This extraordinary copy of the Hebrew Bible was used by the law-courts of Prague to administer the oath to Jews who were to testify. Moderate rubbing along edges of binding. Gold tooling and borders slightly faded on spine. Minor offsetting on endpapers. Text in Hebrew. Binding in overall good- to good, interior in very good condition.
