Photo album (Volume 1) presented to Edmund Landau, professor of mathematics at the University of Göttingen, Germany, as a gift on his 50th birthday, February 14, 1927 by former colleagues and students, among them the better known are Paul Isaac Bernays, Gustav Doetsch, Dunham Jackson, and Carl Ludwig Siegel. The 23 portraits, b&w and sepia tone protedted by decorative textured tissue guards, are accompanied by handwritten (and few typed) personal notes, including the title of their dissertation, the date of the oral examen, and their present academic position in Germany or, as in several cases, in the United States, as well as one in South Africa. In very good condition.
Edmund Georg Hermann (Yehezkel) Landau (1877-1938) was a German-Jewish mathematician and an authority in Analytic Number Theory. He wrote over 250 articles and authored several major works in the field. He taught at the University of Berlin from 1899 until 1909 and held a chair at the University of Göttingen from 1909 until 1933. In accordance with the decree issued in April, all Jewish servants had to dismissed and although he had been a civil servitia before W.W.I.,along with all Jewish professors at German universities he was forced to resign. He was only able to lecture outside of Germany. He died of a sudden death in 1938. Landau, although from an assimilated Jewish family, invested early in 1920s a great deal of effort to establish a Hebrew University in Jerusalem and was invited to talk at the inaugural ceremony in 1925. He briefly taught there during 1927-1928 having accepted the position as chair of mathematics. He returned to Germany to resume his duties in Göttingen. In February 1989, the Hebrew University established the Landau Center for Research in Mathematical Analysis in his honor.List of names in the photo album:Konrad Knopp, Walter Schnee, Leon Lichtenstein, Aubrey J.
