Vintage silver print, on semi-glossy paper, matted and framed (black wood) by one of the original Life Magazine photographers. Unsigned, undated. From a documentary series on dust bowl migrants, made while traveling with John Steinbeck through California labor camps during the winter of 1937–1938. "When this photograph was taken, both Steinbeck and I felt it represented a Madonna figure, with the newborn baby at its mother's swelling breasts, a faint suggestion of proud fatherhood in the background legs and hand." The images served as primary reference for the 1940 film, based on Steinbeck's Pulitzer Prize winning novel, "The Grapes of Wrath." Originally titled "Nursing Mother in Camp, near Visalia, Tulare County, California" the image was later renamed, referencing the character in Steinbeck's novel.

The influence of Dorothea Lange is apparent–she and Bristol journeyed California's Central Valley together– both were deeply concerned about the plight of the unemployed and were associated with the f/16 group. The image is included in the "Grapes of Wrath" portfolio, circa 1993.
