Znaym bey Anton Joh. Preyß
Roblik, Elias Libor.
Folio. (12), 513; (6), 307, 428 pp. All edges red. Original full calf with gold lettering and decoration on spines. Raised bands. Copper-engraved frontispiece. Decorative head- and tailpieces. Decorative initials. Rare and fascinating work being an attack on the Jewish doctrine, not on the Jewish people. The first part presents an apology of Christianity for the Jewish reader, mainly based on the New Testament. The second part is a negative presentation of judaism form in the eyes of the author, mainly based on Eisenmenger’s anti-semitic "Entdecktes Judentum." The title page of the second volume states, ”Allwo aus dem Jüdischen Buch (Talmud genannt) beweisen wird, dass der jetzige jüdische Glauben ein falscher und gottloser Glauben seye.” This work is hence symbolically titled Jewish Eyeglasses, following Luther, and a large pair of eyeglasses is illustrated as the frontispiece. Not in Fürst. This work is profusely illustrated with 6 copper engravings (including frontispiece and 1 double page folded plate). Tiny closed tears along upper front joint and lower back joint of second volume. Slight rubbing on bindings. Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Text in German, gothic script. Bindings and interior in overall very good to near fine condition.
About the author: Elias Libor Roblik (1689-1765) was a Moravian cleric who eventually forsook the priesthood, attempted to dissuade the Jews from their false beliefs through force of argument and Christian love. He attacked Jewish doctrine and not the Jews themselves, who he earnestly believed would see the truth of Christian belief if only their rabbis and their Talmud would not hide the truth from their eyes.
