Anatome Quartum Renovata. Non Tantum ex Institutionibus b.m. Parentis, Caspari Bartholini, Sed etiam ex omnium cum Veterum, tum
Bartholini, Caspari.
Publisher Information: Lugduni (Lyon) Joan. Ant. Huguetan 1677 Octavo. [28], 807, [18]pp. Original full vellum with contemporary handwritten title on spine. Engraved pictorial frontispiece. Title-page in red and black lettering with engraved vignette. Decorative initials and headpieces. Engraved portrait of Thomas Bartholin. This edition of Bartholin's famous anatomy printed in Lyon follows in all essentials the so-called 4th edition printed in Leiden in 1673. These two editions are the largest published of Bartholin's anatomy, containing 40 more engravings than the preceeding editions. Includes 14 plates (12 folding), 97 labeled plates or "tabula" in the text plus 5 additional illustrations not labeled as "tabula". There are 3 instances where the sequential numbering of tabula might normally indicate a missing illustration (XXXII before page 212, XLIX before page 296, and VIII before page 754). In each case, we believe the book complete, and each a case of simple mis-labelling and the inconsistent treatment of folding plate numbering. Some edge wear on binding with head of spine chipped, and minor soiling and foxing on boards and spine. Front hinge starting. Some damp-staining on outer margin of pages. Sporadic foxing throughout. Worming between pp 745-775. Text in Latin. Binding in overall good, interior in fair to good condition.
